Dreaming of an epic adventure but worried about the cost? You’re not alone! Many people shy away from “expensive” destinations like Paris, New York, or Tokyo, thinking they’re out of reach. But here’s a secret: knowing your priorities is the key to planning an incredible trip for less.
You can’t just book flights, hotels, meals, and activities without doing your homework and expect a smooth journey, no matter your budget. Often, the “traditional” way to experience a location is either incredibly pricey and out of reach or surprisingly cheap but without the level of comfort and security you might need. This can deter travelers from specific destinations, but don’t let preconceived notions hold you back from exploring the world! With smart planning, even those famously pricey cities can be enjoyed on a budget.
Prioritize What Matters Most to YOU
The first step to smart travel planning? Identify your non-negotiables. What truly enhances your trip experience? Is it a luxurious hotel, convenient transportation, gourmet meals, or specific activities?
Go big on what matters, and find budget-friendly alternatives for what doesn’t.
- Hotels: If you’re rarely in your room, why splurge? A simpler option with a clean bathroom, comfortable bed, and maybe a decent fitness center might be all you need. (For us, those are our must-haves!)
- Flights: Can you sleep anywhere? Skip the expensive seat upgrades.
- Getting Around: If navigating a new city feels daunting, investing in a guide could be worth it to avoid getting lost and stressed.
These are the details that can make or break your trip. Thinking through your travel style before booking anything is crucial.
“Dupes” and Unconventional Paths: Travel Smarter, Not Harder
While some destinations might genuinely restrict you on a tight budget (good luck finding luxury for less in Switzerland!), sometimes a “dupe” destination is your best friend. Want luxury without the hefty price tag? Head to Slovenia! It boasts striking natural beauty and charming historic cities, offering a high-end experience at a fraction of Swiss prices.

But “dupes” aren’t the only alternative. Sometimes, the “normal” way of traveling somewhere isn’t the only way. Preconceived notions often limit our experiences. Here are a couple of examples:
- The Galapagos Islands: Traditionally, most visitors experience the Galapagos on a cruise, which can easily exceed $1,000 per person per night. But my wife and I visited five incredible islands in January 2025 and spent less than half that! It required more effort – researching the right islands, finding local restaurants, and choosing our own activities – and we missed out on some hard-to-reach cruise-only spots. But for us, the trade-off was worth it, and still allowed us to see a huge range of the beauty and biodiversity the islands have to offer.
- Siem Reap, Cambodia: Often seen as a backpacker’s hub (which was my college experience there!), Siem Reap also boasts some of Southeast Asia’s finest hotels. Think five-star luxury from names like Aman, Anantara, and Park Hyatt. These resorts handle the planning, provide fantastic food, and arrange transportation to all the famous sites. The flip side? You might miss some of the local charm, authentic cuisine, and the thrill of independent exploration.
Neither of these examples has a “correct” path. There’s no wrong answer, just personal preference and a little thoughtful consideration. Don’t let others’ experiences and expectations dictate your travel dreams. If a place calls to you, I guarantee there’s a way to experience it perfectly for you, budget or not.
The Importance of Due Diligence (and Learning from Mistakes!)
Making the “right” choices isn’t always guaranteed – it takes time and effort. The more budget-friendly you go, the more research you’ll need to ensure your experience still aligns with your expectations. Conversely, for high-end trips, you want to be sure you’re getting stellar value for your money.
I’ve learned this firsthand:
- The Brussels Hotel Blunder: On a trip with my dad to Belgium, I booked a highly-rated, centrally located hotel in Brussels for an upscale experience. While the trip was fantastic, the hotel room itself was tiny and lacked the amenities we expected from a higher-end place. It wasn’t relaxing to return to a cramped space after a long day of exploring. In this case, the money spent didn’t live up to the experience expected.
- The All-Inclusive Misstep in Aruba: My wife and I opted for a mid-range all-inclusive in Aruba, trying to balance cost and comfort. While the general area was beautiful, the resort itself was disappointing. We ended up spending most of our time at a cabana, watching sports and trying to avoid sunburn. We quickly learned that for all-inclusive resorts, where you spend most of your time on-site, a different approach to hotel selection is needed. In this case, we should have opted for a higher end option. We also realized all-inclusive beach travel simply isn’t for us – another valuable lesson!
