You know that familiar wave of stress when you start planning a trip? It’s a common feeling: the excitement of an amazing vacation quickly becomes overwhelming with endless options and decisions: there is a literal world of options and just trying to pick a destination. Decision fatigue is a real thing!
But don’t worry, you’re not alone. I’ve been there, and I’ve learned a few tricks to make this first step fun instead of stressful. Here are some of my favorite ways to choose a travel spot, so you can pick your perfect destination without the pressure.
Let the Season Guide You
This is the most straightforward tip. If you want to ski, go somewhere with snow. If you want a beach day, go somewhere warm. But you can also get more creative!
- Dreaming of spring blooms? Washington D.C. is an incredible destination, and it’s especially magical during peak cherry blossom season.
- Craving those cozy, colorful fall vibes? A trip to Acadia National Park in Maine will blow you away.

A quick Google of the best time of year to visit a specific location can quickly guide you to the best destinations based on your travel window, or reaching out to a travel expert can help find the places that might not be quite as popular if you’d prioritize avoiding the same locations as the other people searching Google for the same thing.
Match the Trip to Your Time Off
If you’re planning an extended vacation, go big! Pick a destination that requires a longer visit to make the journey worth it. My wife and I planned our honeymoon this way, traveling more than half way around the world to hike in the remote Himalayas, and it made the time feel truly special.
On the other hand, if you’re short on time, try to maximize it. I love booking flights that leave at night after I finish work. It’s a game-changer—you get an extra day of vacation without taking more time off! Just make sure you prioritize direct flights for these quick trips and you’re comfortable with overnight travel so you can make the most of that extra time.
Choose What Your Soul Needs
When you’re feeling burned out, a vacation should be about what truly recharges you.
- Some people need to relax on a beach in Cabo or Maui.
- Others need to be completely immersed in nature, like hiking in Banff or Patagonia.
- Maybe you just need to let loose in a party city like Ibiza or Las Vegas.
- Or maybe your stress melts away with a massage in a spa town like Sedona.
If you’ve been stuck at a desk, a bustling city might be the perfect antidote. Feel the energy of New York City, get lost in the beautiful chaos of Kathmandu, or marvel at the endless wonder of Tokyo.

You may not know what exactly you’re looking for, and that’s ok! Sometimes it takes experiencing a certain type of vacation to determine whether you’re that kind of traveler. For example, it took a single beach vacation for my wife and I to realize that we’re active travelers. Put yourself out there and you’ll learn a lot about your passions and preferences that can help you maximize your travel experiences for the rest of your life.
Follow the Events
Some of the best trips are centered around a specific event.
- Have you always wanted to experience a traditional European Christmas market? Cities like Copenhagen are incredibly festive and easy to plan for.
- Dreaming of a bucket-list music festival? Go big and plan a trip around events like Bonnaroo in Tennessee or Tomorrowland in Belgium.
- Going to a destination wedding? Use that as the launching point to experience a new place.
Travel with Your Taste Buds
Foodies, this one’s for you!
- Obsessed with pasta? You simply have to go to Italy. You’ll find everything from a small, family-run trattoria in Puglia to a Michelin-starred restaurant in Rome, and every bite will be a revelation.
- Craving a culinary adventure? You could spend a weekend splurging on fine dining in Copenhagen or wander the streets of Mexico City, devouring delicious street tacos.

Let Flight Deals Decide
If you have a few options in mind, let the prices be your guide. Set up flight alerts and when a fantastic deal pops up for one of your destinations, book it! This is how I’ve ended up on amazing trips to Dublin and Copenhagen. It’s spontaneous, fun, and a great way to save money.
The Right Choice Is Your Choice
You don’t have to use all of these ideas for every single trip. The right way to travel is what works for you! If you love spa resorts, go to a new one every year. If you’re looking for variety, try a different approach each time.
